A stainless steel, mechanical, Benrus 'Sky Chief' pilots chronograph. The 'Sky Chief' was introduced by the American watch maker, Benrus, in the 1940's as more and more daring young men and women were taking to the skies.
The watch is powered by the highly utilized work horse Venus calibre 178 movement, that was also found in most all early Breitling chronographs from this time. Later versions of this watch were powered by both the Valjoux calibre 71 and 72 movements.
The beautiful black, glossy dial features a triple register. The dial has applied radium luminous Arabic numerals at the hours, and the track printing and sub dials and branding are all executed in white so that they pop off the dial, and are easy to read whilst flying. The hands are the archetypal lume-filled syringes paired with a white needle-like central chronograph hand.
The watch is presented in all original, untouched condition with an unpolished case still very sharp and crisp. There is an original engraving on the rear of the case, which neatly dates this watch to circa 1947, making this one of the first 'Sky Chief' watches made.
