It features a much thinner profile than the Perpetual models due to its hand-wound movement, and its understated and very classic design contrast the "busier" look of some of the modern Rolex watches. It's a watch that is perfectly at home being worn everyday or only for special occasions.
Today's offering showcases this Certified Pre-Owned early vintage ref. 6044 "Shock Resisting" Rolex Oyster Royal. Rolex was a fairly early adopter of using shock protection in their movements, and the 6044 was an early model with it, as the dial proclaims.
Its tropical dial has 1/5 markings for precision, technical, and sporting timing uses.
The 6044 was also one of the relatively few Rolex models to feature the short-lived Super Oyster crown which was produced for only three years beginning in 1951. The “Super-Oyster” winding crown was an attempt by Rolex to create a waterproof winding crown which did not need to be screwed down. While the system itself worked, in time the rubber seal perished and therefore this crown type was phased out after only a few years of production.
Housed in one of Rolex's water-tight Oyster cases, the wristwatch originally offered its owner complete protection against water, dust, and perspiration. Inside the rugged case Rolex placed one of their Cal. 700 series handwound movement.
We were fortunate to acquire it in all original condition.
Its case is in gorgeous condition - it presents as just short of mint. Its untouched original dial with distinctive numbering pattern has warmed to a tropical sepia tone giving it a true vintage look. It has an interesting area near 11 where the hour hand sat for decades as the watch was safely stored away, protecting it from natural aging.
One of our watchmakers has just fully disassembled the movement down to its last screw and freshly cleaned and oiled it. Its original handwound movement is keeping time.
For the finishing touch it comes equipped with a leather strap and a stainless steel buckle signed Rolex making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
